Cach

Who's in It: Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche, Maurice Benichou, Annie Girardot

The Basics: A well-to-do French couple is stalked by a stranger who keeps sending them videotapes detailing his surveillance and intimate knowledge of their lives. And the flick keeps a few secrets to itself even as the credits roll.

What's the Deal? This is the kind of still, exacting, tight, suspenseful, unnerving movie about race and class and thwarted privilege — the suspected stalker may or may not be an Algerian immigrant done wrong by Auteuil's character's family — that Hollywood doesn't trust American audiences to even get. Instead they make crud like Crash. When Hollywood remakes this thing, it'll be a lot louder, and the good and bad guys will be much more clearly defined. And it will star Jennifer Aniston.

Awards and Stuff: It's the winner of the best director and FIPRESCI prizes, as well as the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. It also won best actor (Auteuil), best director, best editing, the FIPRESCI Prize and best film at the 2005 European Film Awards.

Director Michael Haneke: Social Psychic: How weird is it that a movie about how the great liberal country of France has a serious class divide and about have and have-not tension is coming to screens just as Algerian young people in that country are rioting in the streets and setting everything on fire?

Why You Need to Hunt This One Down: It lays down a lot of technically precise, Hitchcock-influenced tricks, it will make you gasp in horror and it has a final moment reveal that will leave you shouting your still-unanswered questions at the screen.
